Our Heritage Turkeys are raised similarly to our chickens, that is always out on fresh pasture with ample room to run around, chase bugs, take dirt baths and just be turkeys. The turkeys spend most of the day outdoors but can access shelter whenever they choose. We feed them a 100% vegetarian diet that is free of any antibiotics or chemicals. Our organic pastures benefit from the manure the turkeys leave behind allowing us to restore the nutrients in the ground without the use of synthetic fertilizers.
The Heritage Turkeys take around 8 months to grow to a slaughter weight of 15-20 lbs. Contrast this to the commercial breeds that can reach their slaughter weight in 10-12 weeks on a diet that is high in slaughterhouse leftovers and antibiotics.
As consumers we benefit from healthier nutrient dense turkey that is full of flavor and actually tastes like turkey. The meat is firmer as a result of the turkeys running around. Our turkeys don't have the unnaturally large breasts like the turkeys you get in the store. They are smaller but boast much more moisture and flavor. You can actually cook them faster since there is less concern about drying out the meat. This makes it easier to enjoy them throughout the year and not just on Thanksgiving. Unless you try our turkey, you won't know what you are missing out on. Eating a pasture raised heritage turkey is a treat in our home.
